Discussion:
Missing User Picture in Start Menu

This one's odd. My user picture has mysteriously vanished
from the XP Pro Start Menu. It's happened on both my
desktop computer and my latop, though at different times.

I've checked by registry entries and the image seems
properly specified under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Hints\Mike

The PictureSource REG_SZ value is:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default
Pictures\logo.bmp

And yes, the image is present at that location -- a
bitmap at the proper size. It worked for months, but has
now mysteriously vanished from the Start Menu.

Can anyone tell me how to restore it?
Thanks!

If you are using Windows Classic Theme or the Classic Start Menu, there will be no user picture.

Note: If you have disabled Picture and Fax Viewer by using regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll, you will not be able to change the picture. To restore, go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

Then go to User Account/Change my picture/Browse for more pictures/My Pictures Folder/Choose the picture you want to use, then click Open.

If it is a custom-made picture, make sure if it meets the following criteria:
48x48/71 dpi, depth 24.

Hi,

Apart from what Ramesh has said, i would like to add that the start menu picture is also not
available when the Welcome screen is disabled. Re-enabling the welcome screen gets the start menu
picture back.
